The 14th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival kicked off last night in New York City with festival ambassador Kerry Washington and Jamie Hector (The Wire, "Heroes"), stars of the opening film, Night Catches Us. TV/radio personality Free, actress Kellita Smith ("The Bernie Mac Show") and model Liris Crosse were also on hand to celebrate the first night of the festival, which will screen over 70 films throughout the weekend, including various hip-hop documentaries. Tonight's screenings include BET's My Mic Sounds Nice, Kid Capri Presents: The Lionz Den, Bouncing Cats (starring Rock Steady Crew's Crazy Legs), Ni Wakati (starring dead prez's M1) and Mooz-lum. Saturday night will feature ESPN's Tupac/Mike Tyson doc One Night in Vegas and the Closing Night premiere of I Will Follow, directed by My Mic's Ava DuVernay."It is truly a pleasure to give over 70 independent black filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work," says festival founder Stacy Spikes. "That's what Urbanworld is all about." The remainder of the festival will feature appearances by Nia Long, Evan Ross, Kid Capri, Crazy Legs, Omari Hardwick (For Colored Girls), Dijon Talton ("Glee")and more. Urbanworld ends Sunday, September 19.
