From Mark Harris, your Guide to Digital Music

In this week's edition of the Digital Music newsletter:

  • What is FairPlay DRM?
  • Find and Delete Duplicate Files in iTunes 11.
  • How To Convert AMR to MP3.
What is The Analog Hole?
What has the analog hole got to do with digital music you may ask? After all, it has the word 'analog' in it for a start, so what possible link could there be? To find out what it is and how it is exploited to circumvent DRM copy protection, read this short definition article. Read more

What is FairPlay DRM?
FairPlay is a copy protection system that is used by Apple to encrypt some of the content on its iTunes Store. Thankfully digital music from the iTunes Store no longer comes shackled with FairPlay, but you may still have songs in your library that are DRM'd. To find out more, including how you can convert any copy protected iTunes songs you may have, read this short article on FairPlay. Read more

Find and Delete Duplicate Files in iTunes 11
Have you got duplicate songs in your iTunes library that are just hogging valuable hard drive space? If your music collection is in need of a prune, then a quick way to de-clutter it is to start by removing multiple copies of songs. To start streamlining your bloated music library, follow this short iTunes tutorial. Read more

How To Convert AMR to MP3
If you've got AMR ringtones on your phone and want to be able to use them on other devices that aren't compatible with the AMR format, then you'll need an AMR converter to transcode to MP3 and other more popular audio formats. Many portables also store voice recordings (via the condensed microphone) as AMR files for optimized storage. Again, you'll probably need to convert these at a later date to a more popular format in order to work with them. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to use free AMR conversion software to create MP3s. Read more
